This is more or less what the European firms selling sat phones told
me. The players here seem to be Thuraya (.com) if you want the lowest
cost and Europe only (plus other bits e.g. Middle East, but not the
USA etc), or Iridium if you want the world.

I don't see how Globalstar can be taken seriously, with those weird
looking phones with massive antennae sticking out.
