Why don't US pilots use bug wipers?

Are there really that many more bugs in Europe?  Or, are they just more 
concerned with clean wings over there?
Are they legal to use in competition over here in the USA?   Do they work 
well? (European pilots, please answer this one.)

Just wondering if I should order them on the new glider.  Rather
expensive, 
though.
