In a side slip you are looking out the front, in a forward slip you are
looking out to the side to see where you are going (that's how I remember
which is which in case there is a test).
In theory, a side slip keeps the nose and the track aligned to compensate
for a crosswind. And a forward slip, if used to lose altitude on final,
keeps the track in line with the runway, but not the nose.
In reality, you make the airplane go where you want. Most likely you will
fly with a combination of crab and side slip. If you are flying an
aircraft
with no flaps, you will slip hard enough to maintain the glide angle, and
point the nose to maintain the track. Call it whatever the h e double
hocky
sticks you want.

Usually. But in some aircraft, prolonged slips into a low fuel tank can be
a bad idea. And, unless you are about to contact the ground, the airplane
doesn't care what directoin the wind is blowing. In a Cessna 120, I was
more likely to slip based on the fuel selector than the wind sock if the
wind was light. You gotta kick it straight before you touch down anyhow...

Typically you need to coordinate the use of the aileron and rudder to
control the descent rate and the ground track. Full control deflection
would be rare - perhaps if you are trying to drop in as short as possible
after clearing an obstruction.

Unless combined with a bit of crab and / or some forward slip.

Yea. A slip is a slip. Move the controls to make the airplane do what you
need it to do.
